In the early days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony voting was limited only to individuals who had been formally admitted to their church after being screened on their religious views. Reverend Hooker wanted suffrage for all pilgrims. Ultimately, he and about 100 members of his congregation left what is now Cambridge, MA and founded the new Connecticut colony in Hartford. This statue honors the arrival of the Thomas Hooker's congregation of English settlers to Hartford.

A 6' high by 9' wide bronze statue is set on 37" by 71 by 53" polished granite base. The sculptor was Frances Laughlin Wadsworth, the statue was cast at the Bedi-Art Foundry and it was dedicated on April 27, 1964.

The subject of the statue is a family of four Puritans and a lamb. The father has his head bowed, kneeling on his left leg, with his right hand on a Bible. The mother stands to his right holding an infant in her left arm. At her right side stands a young girl leading a lamb. On the base of a pedestal is inscribed:

THE SAFE ARRIVAL
HE WHO BROUGHT US HERE SUSTAINS US STILL

The companion bronze plaque is inscribed:

In June 1636, about 100 members of Thomas Hooker's
congregation arrived safely in this vicinity. With one
hundred and sixty cattle, they had followed old Indian
trails from the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the Connect-
icut River to build a new community. Here they established the
form of government upon which the present Constitution of the
United States is modeled.

Their deeply religious principles found expression in the emblem
and the motto of the seal which the colony soon adopted. The
Seal Of The State of Connecticut still bears the transplanted
grapevines and the legend "Qui Transtulit Sustinet".

This statue, honoring the spirit of all founders, is dedicated to
The Founders Of Hartford. It commemorates the beginning of the
second century of service by the Travelers Insurance Companies.
