In 1778 some 200 Shawnee warriors were planning to attack Fort Donnally in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Phillip Hamman and John Pryor volunteered to go and warn the Greenbrier residents. Aided by one of Cornstalks sisters, Nonhelema, who painted Pryor and Hamman’s faces so that they appeared to be Indians, the two men were able to get ahead of the war party and warn the inhabitants of the fort. Phillip Hamman and John Pryor were known as “The Saviors of Greenbrier. This historic marker stands on Route 60 about 12-miles west of Lewisburg, West Virginia. The text of the marker reads:
BORDER HEROS
“Before the Fort Donnally attack, settlements had been warned by Phillip Hammond and John Pryor, scouts at Point Pleasant, who, made-up as Indians by Nonhelema, the sister of Cornstalk, passed and outran the Indians.”
