Adam, the first human created by God in the Bible and Koran. God then created the first woman, Eve, from Adam's rib. Another statue by Rodin by Eve is near this one. The sculptures were originally intended to be part of a larger work, The Gates of Hell...illustrating Dant'es Divine Comedy. Read more about Adam at (

This sculpture by French artist Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is made of bronze and dated 1904. It is set with two other works by Rodin on a lawn in the Tuileries Garden. It is entitled "L'ombre" or "The Man"..but this website (

"This sculpture is part of the three shadows overcoming the pediment of the Gates of Hell, illustrating an important theme of Dante's Divine Comedy. This gate was commissioned by the state in 1880 to be the future Museum of Decorative Arts, but was never delivered.
Excessive gestures, the rippling muscles, hands and enormous feet are not enough to remember the devastation that flip the head to the ground where everything converges.
Shadow seems to be a simplified version of Adam. The head, bent over, forms a nearly horizontal line with the shoulders and left arm stands forward instead of blocking the torso. The meeting of three identical figures may be the result of a method of work of the artist and wanted to have the snapshot of the same work under different profiles. Shadows, certainly in the form of separate copies, will be presented for the first time at the Galerie Georges Petit in 1889."
