Marked begins with sixteen year old Zoey Redbird being "Marked" as a vampyre in the hall of her school, Broken Arrow's South Intermediate High School. Vampyres are accepted in society, and some teens are selected and marked to become vampyres. They go through a change, and if they succeed they become full fledged vampyres. If their body rejects the change, which could take weeks or years, they die.

Zoe's mother and stepfather belong to a fanatical religious group that does not approve of vampyres. However, Zoe's grandmother, whom she is very close to, is extremely supportive and encouraging to her granddaughter as she adapts to a new life.

Zoe is taken to the House of Night, the vampyre school. It was formerly a private school in Tulsa, but is now where vampyres get their education and learn about the ways of the Goddess Nyx.

Near the end of the book a major event occurs on the grounds of the Philbrook Museum. The authors describe the gazebo and fountain areas with great detail, and when you visit the museum you will have no trouble matching the location in the book to the exact spot on the grounds of the Philbrook Mansion.
