December 18, 1901, Mrs. J.M. Ragsdale, president of the Ladies Library Association, received the following letterfrom the office of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, responding to the association's request for building funds:
"Mr. Carnegie thinks that ten thousand dollars might cover the cost of a suitable free librarybuilding for Canon City...Mr. Carnegie will be glad to provide the above mentioned sum..."
With the city's blessing, and Carnegie's supporting grant, work began on the new library building, On July 4, 1902 the cornerstone of the 60' x 60' red and white stone building was laid, but by September it was relized that the building fund needed an additional three thousand dollars to complete the project. Once again, Andrew Carnegie agreed to the association's request, and the funds were added to his original bequest.
The Canon City Public Library was dedicated on January 5, 1903.
When picture was taken, it was taken from across the street facing south. I tried to get it as close as posible to the old photo.
