This is a small brass plaque placed by the Rotary International mounted on a concrete block. It has a portrait of a Native American Chief at the top of the plaque with the following text:
"The Father of Waters" has provided means of travel and commerce since early days. Indians, explorers, priests, traders, and settlers plied its current in canoes, dugouts, flatboats, keelboats, and towboats.
Until the Civil War, Cape Girardeau thrived as a river port for the district. It shipped out furs, pork and beef products, cotton, grain and lumber; it brought in furniture, dry goods, wetgoods, hardware, and tools, and entertainment by the showboat and races on the river.
