The station originally opened in 1844 and was one of the largest in the UK. Its central location in the Midlands meant it was ideally situated for a station on the long distance routes connecting the North East of Scotland with the South Coast of England via London.

The station also serves more local routes to Birmingham, Cardiff and Stoke-On-Trent.

It was unusual because the station was shared by more than one railway company. The nearby Midland Hotel was the first railway hotel to be built outside London.

These days it is owned by Network Rail and managed by East Midlands Trains, the station is also used by CrossCountry services and oneNorthern Rail service. There are 6 platforms, 5 of which are for through services.

In 2007 extensive remodelling took place, with a new entrance near to the nearby professional Football club of Derby County. The entrance has a lift access and overhead walkways to all the platforms and the main entrance. The new entrance shows the modern station name of Derby rather than Derby Midland.

Because of the station’s central location there were major carriage and locomotive works nearby, but these closed a few years ago. These work sheds were renovated at the same time as the rail station and the buildings now form part of the Derby College campus.

On platform 1 there are a number of war memorials on the platform side of the original wall of the station. These are all of people who worked for the railway company.

There is a Boer War memorial dating from 1902 which was originally in the entrance hall but moved to here in 1984 when the entrance was renovated.

There is a World War I stone memorial dedicated to staff who worked at the nearby St. Mary’s Goods Yard.

There are also a set of 18 bronze World War I memorials. These were originally housed in individual engineering workshops, with the workshop number on each memorial. When the workshops were closed down and demolished they were put into storage. They were then moved to here when the station was renovated in 2009.
