The Ragga gorge

In thousand of years the Ragga-river has created one of the most beautiful and gigantic gorges in the Alps. The Raggaschlucht was first opened to visitors in the year 1882. 1978 it became a Natural Monument. Over wooden bridges and stairs you will be able to walk safe through this magnificant gorge with a length of 800 m and 200 m difference in altitude. You will pass several waterfalls, impressive rock formations and overhangs which are so narrow that you can hardly see the sky. You will walk back through forests on a shady trail viewing the valley of the Möll, the village of Flattach and the surrounding mountain ranch of the Hohe Tauern. It will take you about 1 hour for the complete tour.

The Water Course

The approximately 20 square kilometers catchment area of the River Ragga, located in the northern part of the Kreuzeck Group, includes an alpine area with altitudes of up to 2800 m above sea level. The precipitation of 1500 mm per year is divided between rain and snow. There is an annual flood in the gorge during the period of snowmelt. About one third of the total precipitation evaporates, two thirds collect in lateral streams wirth coalescence in the River Ragga. In the lower part of the catchment area the river has cut a narrow rocky gorge over a distance of 990 m. At the end of the gorge the river has discharged its energy and a broad alluvial fan has accreted which extends as far as to the river Möll.
