It would certainly be an accident to bury someone alive but in George Wellington's case it's the accident that kept him from being buried alive!

It seems George Wellington was a bit of a party animal in his time and he invited a few friends over for a night of frivolity on June 18th of 1868. Even as the party broke up George was said to have felt more like singing and dancing than calling it a night. None the less he and his wife retired for the night looking forward to the new day ahead.

The next morning his wife was surprised to find George still in bed when she awoke. She tried to wake him but to no avail. It looked as if George had passed sometime in the night. The doctor was summoned and the diagnosis was that he had passed due to a heart failure and had died about 3 a.m.(that usually does do a person in). George was turned over to the undertaker.

Fortunately in those days internment was not what it is today. In fact the undertaker was a bit perplexed at how restful George looked, almost as if asleep not dead. None the less he did not appear to be breathing. Still something seemed wrong, the undertaker decided to error on the side of caution and called in two more doctors. Both came and looked George over, both declared him dead.

Now things at this point look grim (as in reaper) at this point for George. Three doctors and his wife have declared him dead. But it was a simper day and life wasn't as rushed as it is today. The family decided to wait a couple days just to be sure. Two days past and still George lie still in his casket as a mirrored pond high at mornings first light. Friends and family gathered around at what was to be George's last get together, his funeral.

Afterwards the body was loaded on to the hearse for the final journey to the cemetery just east of town. But as the hearse ambled towards the cemetery, out of nowhere a team of horses pulling a wagon came thundering towards the entourage. Unbelievably no one was driving the wagon! Despite the best efforts of the driver to bring the hearse to a quick stop it was not soon enough. A collision ensued, wagons toppled and so did George. In the calamity that followed folks came to aid in gathering the horses and righting the debris including the casket and George. As the help approached the casket a voice was heard "For God's sake, let me out!". It came from within the casket! It was George!

He was helped from the casket and began to tell his tale. George told of his "awaking" at 5 a.m. the morning following the party. He said he could hear everything but could not move a muscle, not even an eyelid. He felt and heard his wife trying to awaken him, he heard the doctor pronounce him dead. He was terrified as he overheard the funeral arrangements being made knowing full well what lie at the finale of any funeral. He said he heard the sermon, the comments at the casket, was awake as they loaded him into the hearse. He told of even hearing the oncoming horses on the way to the cemetery. He said "I felt them trying to back the hearse and let the team go by, but they were not quick enough. As the collision came, my eyes opened and my speech was restored, and from that moment on, I was alright."

No one recalls today for sure just which intersection that fateful crash took place at so I've waymarked this tale at the entrance to George's premature resting place. See if you can find his "final" final resting place within...
