38, 104 Helios

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary (1999 - 2008), City of Sunshine exhibition, this site specific sculpture by Montana artist, Patrick Zentz, was commissioned for permanent display. The numbers in the title of this sculpture descibe its location, in west latitude and north longitude. "Helios" is Greek for "sun". The intersecting steel legs relate metaphorically to the intersection at Cascade and Kiowa and an anemometer, with seven aluminum anemometer cups and one brass sphere, not only rotates from east to west, but is also coupled to an electronic mechanism that automatically adjusts its angle above the south horizon, matching the actual sun's seasonal changes. The anemometer with its shiny brass globe thus provides a meaphorical sun that moves in the same apparent arc as its solar inspiration.
