The duration of the Wisconsin glacial cycle (the Würm period) is dated from 80000 to 13000 BP. As this is the last of the glacial periods, its remnants clearly are the best conserved. As for the entire glacial period, also the Würm period took place in different stages. The most particular criterion of the Chiemsee glacier is its end morains, which have the shape of amphitheater like coronas. This remnant is best conserved in the area between river Alz and the city of Traunstein. The part in the northwest is influenced by the Inn Glacier that was active during a later period. The procedure of birth of the geological area of lake Chiemsse, its outer morains – the first rank of the Chiemsee-Amphitheater, can be easily traced in the area of the northern part of the lake of the monestary in Seeon, starting from the vineyard mountain in the east to the steep slopes of Höllthal – even today. East of river Alz this morain continues across Niesgau-Perading-Haßmoning-Neudorf to the west shore of River Traun all the way to the bottom of the mountain Hochberg in Traunstein. Despite the following erosion, Wartberghöhe, Guntramshügel and Schnepfenluck today mark the eastern border of this oldest end-morain of the Würm Period. Today, the heights of the morain in the breakthrough area of river Alz reach betwen 551 to 575 meters. Therefore one can assume that the water level of this early reservoir lake reached up to 560 meters above sea level – 40 meters above today's water level of the lake. The traces of the last stadium of the Würm period (the 'Seebruck stadium') which started about 17000 years ago, are less prominent as the previous and can be found in the immediate vincinity of the lake. Its most prominent height reaches in the East from Ising to mount Höhenberg at Oberhochstätt toward lake Tüttensee. It can be followed further as the western boundary of the Erlstätter drought valley reaching to Bad Adelholzen. The melting water that ran down this valley largely flattened out the youngest morain in the area of Chieming. The lack of this morain between the villages of Graben and Lambach is a result of erosion by the melting water of the Chiemsee glacier streaming north. Only the hill 'Kirchhügel' in Seebruck has resisted and shown river Alz its way. The glacier started to retract into its root basin about 15000 Years ago. The barrier formed by this terrain is important to this day, as – with 539 meters above sealevel – it has height that is 20 meters above the level of lake Chiemsee today. It is this barrier, that is meant when referring to the 'ancient Chiemsee' (Ur-Chiemsee).
