The sluice gate sits adjacent to an outdoor restaurant in the picturesque village of Cesky Krumlov. Situated across the Vltava River high atop a hill is the historic Krumlov Castle.
The sluice gate helps divert water from the Vltava River to a waterwheel on the far side of the mill.
While there is a report of an mill at this location in 1594, the first record of an iron mill was 1601. The mill reportedly closed during the 30 years war, and reopened in later years, again as an iron mill. Records report various operations through the years, as the mill changed hands.
In the early 1990's, the village of Cesky Krumlov underwent a makeover, and was nomintated as a UNESCO world heritage site. During this time, the sluice gate was repaired to its current operational status.
