There has been a Lifeboat Station at Walmer
since 1856, but it wasn't until 1930 that the first motor lifeboat took station
here. The current Walmer Lifeboat Station building dates back to 1871 and
outwardly has changed very little. Walmer was once home to an All Weather
D-Class lifeboat, the last being 'The Hampshire Rose', which was withdrawn in
May 1990. Walmer then became an Inshore Lifeboat Station. The first Atlantic 21
boat 'James Burgess' (B-589) took station in 1992.
Walmer Lifeboat Station is currently home to 2
inshore lifeboats, the D-Class 'Duggie Rodbard' (designated D-663), and the
Atlantic 85 'Donald McLauchlan' (designated B-808).
