The congregation was founded in 1894, one of the first Christian Science churches in the world. The building was originally designed to be built of stone but due to budget the building was constructed of brick. The building was designed by architect Edward Gordon Garden, of the firm Mauran, Russell & Garden in a Classic Revival design.
