The statue to Oliver Cromwell stands in front of Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster. The memorial has three elements: a large base that has a narrower, inscribed plinth on top of it and the statue of Cromwell on top cast in bronze. The lion rests on the large bottom base beneath the inscription to Cromwell. The lion is cast from bronze and is shown laid down with its front legs extended in front of it. The lion is looking to the right towards Parliament Square.
"Cromwell’s statue stands outside the Palace of Westminster in the eyes of some defending the liberties of Parliament against all encroachments.
The statue was controversial when it was unveiled in 1899, three hundred years after the birth of Oliver Cromwell. Of all figures in our national history Cromwell was, and remains, one of the most written about and one of the most divisive. Unlike some nations the UK has very few museums that memorialise political figures, but Cromwell is the exception. The Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon focuses solely on the man born in the town, who lived over half his life there, but who died the head of state in the Palace of Whitehall in 1658."
