An excerpt from his obituary found on
Ancestry.com:
PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Herbert Edward ‘Buster’ Barrett, Jr., 74, died
suddenly Friday, March 9, 2001 at his home in Port Arthur.
He was born Oct. 18, 1926, the son of Thelma (Drake) Barrett of Rye, and the late Herbert E. Barrett. He attended Portsmouth schools until
enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he served as an officer in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After his discharge in 1947, he worked as a boiler tender on the Boston & Maine Railroad and later as a security officer for the government at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
He also worked as a diesel mechanic on the tugboats in Portsmouth where he renewed his love for the sea and began a new career in the Merchant Marine. He was the first graduate from the Mates program in 1968, which enabled merchant seaman to progress to officer level.
He began his career as an Able Bodied Seaman and grew through the ranks, retiring as Captain. His tenure in the Merchant Marine took him to virtually every port in the world.
