The first Town Hall for the town of Orrington fell into disrepair in the late 1860s. After much debate and holding Town Meetings in in a "new Union Hall at South Orrington", the currently used building was constructed. It was very different inside than today. It originally had a kitchen, high tin ceilings and large open meeting space. There was also a barn and wagon shed.
During World War II, the tower was used as an observation post for the Aircraft Waning Service - Civil Defense volunteers. Evolution of this building has changed the outside. The barn is gone. There has been a Veteran's Memorial and flag pole added. Ramping for the handicapped has taken place.
The town is struggling again with whether to replace this building or not due to changes in building standards and increased personnel.
