Ottenby, on the very south of the island of Öland, is one of the top areas for birding in Sweden. A visit to Öland offers fantastic opportunities for bird studies all the year round.
Ottenby Bird Observatory has been run by The Swedish Ornithological Society (BirdLife Sweden) since 1946. In the observatory garden, about 20,000 birds are caught annually in mist nets and funnel traps. Ringing the birds provides a unique opportunity of answering questions about bird migration, e.g. through ring recoveries. Ottenby Bird Observatory has conducted numerous studies on different aspects of bird migration but also on birds as hosts of tick-borne diseases and Avian Influenza. The ringing scheme has been standardised since 1972, to monitor long-term population trends of birds and to bring attention to any sudden decreases in bird numbers.
