In the early years of camp Capitola, visitors rarely stayed in accommodations with private bathrooms. Even when summer cabins eventaully had a luxury the toilet, they seldom had, showers, tubs or sinks.

whether vacationers were camping, renting a cabin, livinge in their own cottage, or booked into a room at the Hotel Capitola took advantages of bath houses at the beach.

When Frederick Hihn, Capitals developer completed the largest hotel in 1897 , he opened its bath house to all tourists.Bath and towels were available for a small fee.

The custom of bathing at the hotel lasted until the hotel burned in December 1929. suddenly there was nowhere to take a bath or shower after a day at the beach. As a solution in the older neighborhoods small structures were built with shower stalls, toilets and changing rooms.
Over the years, as cottages were renovated and replaced the bath house disappeared. One of the last was discovered behind a house on San Jose Avenue. In 2006 it was moved to next to the Capitola museum and restore by volunteers. Today it is ab interpretative exhibit that shows how folks on holiday once lived resort life."
