Westlich der Thüringer Landeshauptstadt Erfurt führt die Autobahn A 4 durch das Ensemble der Drei Gleichen. Auf drei benachbarten Felskegeln stehen die Burg Gleichen, die Mühlburg und die Wachsenburg. Anders als der gemeinsame Name vermuten lässt, handelt es sich nicht um drei Burgen, die einander gleichen, und sie befanden sich auch nie in einer Hand. Die Bezeichnung „Drei Gleichen“, die seit dem 18. Jahrhundert verwendet wird, geht wohl auf die Ähnlichkeit ihrer Lage auf drei Anhöhen zurück.
Zudem will es die Legende, dass die drei Burgen während eines Unwetters im 13. Jahrhundert gleichzeitig vom Blitz getroffen wurden. Die Ruinen der Mühlburg und der Burg Gleichen sowie die Wachsenburg mit Hotel können ganzjährig besucht werden. Das Ensemble gehört zur Burgenstraße Thüringen.
