You can learn so much about the history of Aiken. It is blessed with many historical markers. A casual walk downtown, with stops along the way to enjoy the markers, unravels the history making it all so meaningful and clear.

Historical marker 2-26 "Original Survey of Aiken" reads
"The town of Aiken, on land donated by Mr Beverly M Rodgers to the SC Rail Road in 1834, was laid out around a core of 27 city blocks bounded by Edgefield and Park Aves and Newberry and Williamsburg Sts. This area was surveyed by civil engineers Cyril Ouviere Pascalis (1810-1835?) and Andrew Alfred Dexter (1809-1854), who had also helped survey the route of the new railroad between Hamburg and Charleston in 1832-33."

In very small print at the bottom of the sign there is
"Erected by the Henry Tyler Chapter, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Jefferson Davis Chapter No 2485, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Gen David Williams Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the War of 1812, and the Trenton Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, 2004."

Many of the historical markers in Aiken are double sided with an additional part of the story behind the marker continuing to the other side of the marker. This one has the same information on both sides of the marker.
