Despite not looking like a "shack" or a "joint" -- it's got carpet and a hostess stand -- The Pit receives frequent mention in Top 10 lists. Specialty of the house is chopped hog, and you'll season your food yourself, with either a classic-style sweet barbecue sauce, or the more appropriate tomato and vinegar sauce. There are plenty of sides, and you'll get two with a plate. You also have the option of brisket, ribs, chicken, and even barbecued tofo. For those not into barbecue, they offer salads, sandwiches (including burgers), and a few "home cookin'" items. Note that, depending on whether you're visiting during lunch or dinner, some items may not be available. If you still have room, they have several desserts from which to pick, with the carrot cake and the banana pudding being the most popular.
The Big Boy Meat Combo is your pig-out deal at $28.95: Pork chopped BBQ, beef brisket, BBQ chicken, and two pieces of each kind of rib from the menu. Those looking to go on the cheap should take a look at the appetizers, some of which are under $10, although the chopped or pulled pork sandwiches at lunch are $7.59.
They do have a full bar, stocked with some really good stuff, and there's a fairly decent wine and beer selection, and in the latter case, some higher-end ales.
