Oatman was once a prosperous gold mining camp. When the mines closed down and Route 66 was re-routed on a new alignment that bypassed the town, the residents and businesses found a new way to "mine" dollars from tourists wallets. Hence the name "New Digg'ns".
Dawn in the desert can be particularly beautiful but by then the moon and stars would not still be out as depicted. The lonely stretch of asphalt through the stark desert terrain very much resembles what Route 66 (as indicated by the road sign) looked like through this part of the country.
