In response to WWI to ensure military readiness, the Maryland National Guard constructed several armories designed with a theme of Medieval fortifications. The "Frederick City Armory" was built in 1913. It was constructed in two phases, using different brick - red on the east and buff-colored on the west. This cornerstone is in the original red brick section on east at the intersection of Bentz and Second Streets. Since 1980, the building is now used as headquarters and activity center for Frederick Parks and Recreation.
