Lower Battery
Although Colonel George Barney recommend the upgrading of Sydney's defences in the 1830s, no action was taken until 20 years later. As part of the improvement of the Dawes Point Battery in the 1850s, Colonel Barney oversaw construction of the lower gun battery comprising fifteen 32-pounder guns to supplement the upper battery. The lower battery was demolished in the 1890s, although it is probable that archaeological remains survive beneath the trees in front of upper battery.
