Charles I (1654 - 1730) was Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel from 1670 - 1730. It was in his regency that the famous mountain park Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe together with the Hercules Monument (Kassel's most prominent landmark ever since) and the Karlsaue park with the Orangerie Castle were constructed.
The alabaster statue presents Charles as a young man, dressed as a Roman legionnaire, which is most probably due to the landgrave's fondness of classicism and the antique Roman era. It was created by Bartholomäus Eggers in 1686 and put in place 1768. Today's display actually is a 1936 replica, with the original being kept in Schloss Wilhelmshöhe castle. The figure is about life-size and is located on a large stone plinth on the Karlsplatz in front of the Karlskirche.

Landgraf Karl (1654 - 1730) regierte von 1670 bis 1730 und ließ u.a. den berühmten Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe mit dem Herkules (dem bis heute wichtigsten Wahrzeichen Kassels) sowie die Karlsaue mit dem Orangerieschloss anlegen.
Die Alabasterstatue präsentiert Karl als jungen Mann und wie ein römischer Legionär gekleidet, was vermutlich auf seine Vorliebe für den Klassizismus und die Epoche des alten Roms zurückzuführen ist. Sie wurde von Bartholomäus Eggers 1686 geschaffen und 1768 aufgestellt. Das heutige Exemplar ist eine Kopie von 1936, das Original wird im Schloss Wilhelmshöhe aufbewahrt. Die Figur ist etwa lebensgroß und steht auf einem hohen steinernen Sockel auf dem Karlsplatz vor der Karlskirche.
