K. B.'s Brats is located at 3600 Lakeview Parkway in Rowlett TX. When the Blasterz descended, every one got a different flavor dog. Younger Sister Blaster loves the Macaroni and Cheese Dog, while Older Sister Blaster had the Polish dog and Daddy Blaster had the white bratwurst. Mama Blaster would have had the curry dog, but she was not available to go on this particular adventure. No worries -- she'll get there soon!

KB’s Brats serves a new take on old favorites, both German and American

By CALEB SLINKARD Herald-Banner Staff

ROWLETT — For most Texas, cracking open a Beck’s is as close to German fare as they get. But KB’s Brats, located at 3600 Lakeview Parkview in Rowlett, serves both traditional German cuisine and a twist on American.

Opened last month by Kevin Hust and his mother, Birgit, KB’s Brats is far closer to a traditional “imbiss” than a fast food restaurant, which represents the German affinity for walking as opposed American drive-throughs.

“My mother has always wanted to bring something over from Germany,” Kevin said. “We knew when we saw this place, it doesn’t get any more traditional than this concept. This building was a perfect fit.”

Kevin, who is a first lieutenant in the Army and a personal banker with Chase, and his mother were well-suited to handle both sides of starting the business.

“Anything that would happen inside, my mom, who has been in the food industry her entire life, could do that,” he said. “We knew I could handle all of the business– taxes, payroll, talking with the vendors, things like that. The city of Rowlett has been very helpful walking us through the process.”

After they found their location, KB’s Brats was open in less than two months.

“Getting the business open happened very quickly,” Kevin said. “We got all the vendors signed up, the city lined up, and it all happened at once. From the time we saw the place for sale to the point where we sold our first brat was seven weeks.”

And while the menu has dishes you would expect from a German restaurant, like bratwurst and mettwurst (served in a curry sauce with freshly-baked bread), it is the unique and somewhat wild hot dog combinations that make KB’s Brats one of a kind.

“We knew that we couldn’t just do brats, which is where the Nathan’s Famous Hotdogs came in,” Kevin said. “It was the perfect mingling of cultures. We also have sandwiches, and sides to round out the menu.”

The Reuben Dog is one of the top sellers according to Kevin, along with the ‘Bavocado’ (bacon, avocado and spicy mayo). Perhaps the most unique item on the menu is the dessert dog, made with marshmallow fluff, peanut butter and fudge that have been heated up to a liquid state.

In the future, Kevin hopes to make the location BYOB and expand their catering options. KB’s Brats is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday. They serve Coca-Cola products, Powerade, water, tea, juice and hot chocolate.

“We couldn’t be happier with the reception,” Kevin said. “It’s been truly amazing. We’ve had five customers who came six consecutive days. For Rockwall residents, it’s worth the drive.”
