Located on top of a rocky, narrow hill, Mutrah Fort stands tall facing the harbor and the waters of the Gulf of Oman.
The fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese in the 1580's and ultimately captured by the Omanis around 1654 AD. It consists of three circular towers: a huge one sitting on the summit, a smaller one located at the first point in the West, and another smaller tower which still houses one of the old cannons to the North of the fort near the large tower.
Mutrah Fort can only be visited from the outside as it is currently undergoing renovation. One can however scale the flank of the fort using a narrow staircase bringing you to the outside walls and a great view of the ocean.
