Visitors to downtown Lakeview might notice this prominent three-story brick building, known as the Heryford Building. There is a historical marker located at the SW corner entrance that reads:
HERYFORD BUILDING CONSTRUCTED IN 1913 BY W.P. AND J.D. HERYFORD, PIONEER CATTLEMEN, THE PRIMARY PURPOSE BEING TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR THE EARLY ELKS CLUB AND OFFICE SPACE TO ATTRACT GOOD DOCTORS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE. THE GROUND FLOOR AND BASEMENT WAS OCCUPIED BY A DEPARTMENT STORE AND EARLY DRUG STORE. tHE SECOND STORY WAS PRIMARILY ELKS CLUB AND OFFICESPACE, WHILE THE THIRD STORY CONTAINED APARTMENTS. lATER SOLD TO THE ELKS CLUB AND THENCE INTO PRIVATE INTERESTS. PLAQUE COURTESY OF LAKE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY -1989- |
There is a very good writeup on this building's history on Wikipedia.com here. I also discovered after doing some online research that this building formally had the title of 'BPOE BUILDING - 1913' when it was the Elks Lodge club location before it moved. There is a picture from the U of O Digital Collection here. This building was registered as a National Historic Place in 1980.
