Willemstad is the capital city of Curcao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea. Its was founded in 1634 and is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites due to its unique Caribbean-flavored architecture reflecting not only European urban-planning concepts but also styles from the Netherlands as well as Spanish and Portuguese colonial towns with which the city engaged in trade.
Its inner city consists of two historic districts, Punda and Otrobanda, with each separated by the Sint Anna Bay: a narrow but deep water channel that leads into the large natural harbor called the Schottegat.
Punda was established in 1634 when the Dutch captured the island from Spain. The original name of Punda was "De Punt" (English: "the Point"). Otrobanda (English: "The Other Side") was founded in 1707; it is the newer section of the city and is considered to be the cultural center of Willemstad.
The Punda waterfront has gone through several night-time building light decoration changes over the years. Included in this waymark are images of three periods within the last 10 years.
