Here, August 21, 1864, General Philip H. Sheridans's Federal forces were defeated by General Jubal A. Early. The fighting swept over such fine old estates as Harewood, Sulgrave, Tuscawillow, Cedar Lawn, and Locust Hill, still marked by shot and shell.
