The McNay Art Museum has grown over the years from a mansion converted to a museum to a top-flight modern art museum with dedicated wing and art from old masters to contemporary "it" artists.
There are several art pieces listed on their inventory that were created by the late Richard Harrell Rogers. Rogers has several public art pieces scattered around San Antonio that are already waymarks (WMGQ2A, WMD2NV, WMEFDS, WMGTH1, WMGTN3, and WMGV45). The one featured here is Vector I, which is similar in some features to his Vector IV bench design (WMGTN3). For this Vector I sculpture, he used stainless steel formed in geometric shapes using squared pipes and parallelagram shaped pipes arranged mostly in 90* angles to look somewhat cubic, but still open and free formed. Observing the sculpture straight on the cardinal sides, you see different shapes. Looking from random angles gives a more complex appearance as the shapes tend to merge and transform. Surprisingly, this Vector I sculpture is not listed in the Smithsonian's research information system (SIRIS). It should be.
The title plate found on the ground next to one side of the Vector I piece reads:
"Richard Rogers
American, 1941-2012
Vector I 1968
Stainless Steel
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John Forestier
997.46"
