Ideen til indretning af et fyr i kirketårnet tilskrives grundlæggeren af Det Kongelige danske Søkortarkiv Poul Løwenørn (1751-1826), som under en tjenesterejse i 1798 blev præsenteret for ønsket om et fyr på Tunø. 1801 blev det 11 meter høje kirketårn indrettet som lampefyr. 1846 blev der installeret et et linseapparat. I forbindelse med ændringen til vinkelfyr i 1906 blev tårnet forhøjet med ca. 7 meter. I 1921 fik fyret installeret blaugasbrænder og til hjælp for fiskerierhvervet fik fyret i 1923 indlagt en vid vinkel, der angav sejlretningen til Tunø havn. Fyret er også i nutiden i drift
Før i tiden havde Tunø sin egen fastboende præst, og i mange år fungerede præsten som øens fyrmester, og det hed sig, "at på Tunø sover præsten hos fyrmesterens kone”.

The idea to create a lighthouse in the church tower is said to come from the founder of the Royal Danish Sea Map archive Poul Löwenörn (1751-1826), who during an official journey heard about the wish for a lighthouse. In 1801 the 11 meter high church tower was changed to a lamp lighthouse. In 1846 a Fresnel linse was installed. In 1906 it was changed into an angle light and expanded with another 7 meters. In 1921 the lighthouse got a Blaugas burner and as a help for the fishermen it also got a wide angle to indicate the sail direction to Tunø habour. The light house still works. Earlier tunø had it's own clergyman who also worked as the lightsman. Therefore the locals said that: "On Tunø the clergyman sleeps with the lightsman's wife"!
