The image that Ansel Adams made and the one I made were taken directly from the side of road (US Route 395) - Although they are not taken at the exact same locations. Due to urban development the vantage point Ansel used is now obscured with buildings. The location I used (and provided the coordinates to)is about 1 mile south of his location, and is directly across the street from a Best Western hotel. From this location you cannot see huge "LP" painted on Alabama hills that Ansel Adams removes from his prints. You can make your image from the ground - but like many of Ansel Adams images and and the image I made it was shot from the roof platform on a vehicle. I have well made roof rack and ladder I use to get on top of my truck. (I regularly refer to my truck as a tripod extension that also serves as a mule that carries my gear). The high vantage point puts the camera up about 14' off the ground. I made my image in February (sunrises at that time of the year are very very cold).
