Former limestone quarry Dolní Kamenárka in Štramberk is not only a principal part of the botanical garden and arboretum, but also important paleontological locality rich for Jurrasic and lower-Cretaceous fossils.
Kamenarka Tithonian (late Jurrasic) and Cretaceus sediments (grey Silesian-unit limestones with incorporated layers of claystones and sandstones) are rich for numerous fossilised organisms - moss animals, Crinoid segments, sea urchins, shark teeth, Brachiopod shells, Belemnites etc.
Kamenárka is a part of so called Štramberk Karst (Štramberský kras), a small limestone unit under Beskydy Mountains in North-East part of Moravia.
