On October 29, 1960 the Cal Poly football team played an away game at Bowling Green State University. That night as their charted C-46 aircraft took off from the Toledo, Ohio airport, is crashed and burned, killing twenty-two of the forty-eight people on board.
This memorial plaque honors those involved in the crash. It also honors the outpouring of support that resulted in the "Mercy Bowl" football game in 1961 which raised about $200,000 to aid those involved in the tragedy.
