Construction of this Gothic style church began in 1377 with the laying of the cornerstone on the site of a former synagogue in what was once the Jewish section of Würzburg. The chancel was consecrated in 1392. With the city building the church, the nave was completed in 1441 and in 1479 the tower was completed.
In 1493 the famous characters, "Adam" and "Eve" were completed by the famous sculptor and woodcarver, Tilman Riemenschneider and were mounted on the south portal. Over the centuries the interior was redone several times, then came March 16, 1945, when the British fire bombed Würzburg, destroying much of the city and seriously damaging the church. The roof, stained glass windows and interior were destroyed, with only the walls and the tower remaining standing.
The structure has the typical Gothic high narrow arched windows. They were not removed and stored as were many throughout Germany during the war, as it was felt the city held no military significance and would not be bombed. Consequently all the windows date from the time of the post war reconstruction.
