Both sides of marker: In 1827, Richard Gilbert opened a commerical limestone quarry three quarters of a mile south on Jack's Defeat Creek. Stinesville's oolitic limestone, desirable as building stone, was used in several Indiana courthouses and Soldiers' and Sailors' monument, Indianapolis. Limestone has been a major economic factor in area.
