Upshur County

Formed in 1851 from Lewis, Barbour and Randolph. Named for Abel Parker Upshur, the great Virginia statesman. Samuel and John Pringle, the settlers, came in 1764. The Pringle brothers later guided other pioneers here.


Lewis County

Formed, 1816, from Harrison. Named for Colonel Charles Lewis who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. Home of Jesse Hughes, frontier scout, and boyhood home of General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.
