When the Empire State Plaza was constructed during the late 1960s and early 1970s, then New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller amassed a large collection of modern abstract sculpture for public display on the grounds of the Empire State Plaza.
The focal point of the plaza is a rectangular reflecting pool that stretches from northwest to southeast through the center of the plaza. There are twelve large works of modern abstract sculpture by major artists on displayed on the grounds and surrounding the reflecting pool of the 1000' by 700' plaza. In counter clockwise order from the northwest are:
