Early wells were typically large shallow pits with the sides shored by rock. As the need to penetrate deeper to reach water increased two different types of drill were developed. The drop-bit rig required a tall derrick because the drill bit was raised and then dropped to drive the well deeper. This rig is a rotary drill where downward pressure was applied to the bit while it was rotated.
