During our visit of Robben Island our bus stopped two times for turtles crossing the road. According to our guide this happen frequently. The bus driver has been kind enough to stop his bus to allow me to take photos of the tortoises.

The angulate tortoise or rooipens, is a species of tortoises found in dry areas and scrub forest in South Africa. This tortoise in the only known member of the genus Chersina. Internationally it is known by the two names of "Angulate" and "Bowsprit" tortoise. Locally in southern Africa however, it is uniformly known as the Angulate tortoise.

Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars before the fall of apartheid.
