When the bridge was built in 1922 by the American Bridge Company, automobiles were much narrower and moved somewhat slower than today's cars. So what was once a two-lane bridge is now restricted to one lane of traffic at a time. This crossing of the Boise River is about 1/4 mile south of the ford where the Oregon Trail crossed the river.
