The monument depicts the civil war general Ulysses S. Grant on top of a horse. It is facing west towards the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial is the official east point of the end of the national mall. The west point being the Lincoln memorial. The sculpture itself is situated in Union Square, the area between the Capitol Reflecting Pool and the Capitol. The statue itself is the second-largest equestrian statue in the country and the fourth-largest in the world.
Grant was the civil war general for the North, who also worked with Lincoln and helped keep the country together. Lincoln never considered the war a Civil War, because it would consider congress to acknowledge the south as a separate independent country.
