YHA Queenstown Lakefront is an excellent hostel located across the street from Lake Wakatipu and a 10 minute walk from downtown.
The hostel gets a 3.5 out of 5 rating on tripadvisor.com with a majority being "very good" evaluations. We only stayed for one night, but I think we managed to get a pair of the sweetest rooms available. Our family of four stayed in two bunk rooms that adjoined and had balconies overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the main street into town. This kind of room would cost a fortune in one of the hotels on the same strip. We didn't use many of the facilities as we decided to eat out on our last night on South Island but the lounge and kitchen were large.
