The Gertelbach originates in a source horizon between the lower red sandstone and granite Bühlertal-west of the Black Forest Road and ends after only 2.5 km in the (smaller) Wiedenbach. The creek overcomes approximately 330 meters. In the steepest section, about 800 m upstream of the mouth, the creek falls cascade 220feet deep in many cases levels of up to 7 m high. The main event area at the upper end of the valley terrace measures 70 meters.
