This is the last existing historic cinema in Istanbul. The place where it stands was originally a "passage", a common urban solution to connect streets, through a hall with shops. It was built by Agop Köçeyan in 1870, after the big fire which devastated this area of Istanbul.
It was transformed into a cinema only in 1948, playing initially Hollywood movies. In 1952 it begun screening Turkish movies.
Nowadays it hosts the Istanbul Film Festival and occasionally it's a place for late nights dancing, as an improvised nightclub.
