This marble sculpture is located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. A placard dates it to 500 BC and was excavated at Sardis....then Lydia...now Turkey. It also indicates that it "had been assembled on a re-used base during the Roman period, probably after great floods has disrupted the sanctuary. Lions were the attribute of Kybele, the great mother goddess of Anatolia. This statue was probably associated with her cult."
