From Wikipedia:

"The caves were re-discovered in modern times on 12 January 1959 by five friends, who entered through a narrow sinkhole known as "La Mina". This forms one of the two natural entrances to the cave system. A third entrance was created in 1960 to allow easy access for tourists. The cave is divided into two main parts known as Nerja I and Nerja II. Nerja I includes the Show Galleries which are open to the public, with relatively easy access via a flight of stairs and concreted pathways to allow tourists to move about in the cavern without difficulty. Nerja II, which is not open to the public, comprises the Upper Gallery discovered in 1960 and the New Gallery discovered in 1969." (visit link)

The information board reads:

The natural opening you can see sideways is the entrance used by five young people from Maro municipality. They entered the namely Cemetery Mine (Mina del Cementerio as say locals), which is the First Room we access when climbing down into the cave.

However, on January 12th, 1959, José Luis Barbero de Miguel, the Manuel and Miguel Munoz Zorrilla brothers, Francisco Navas Montesinos and José Torres Cardenas decides to go further into the cave after seeing a flock of bats which escaped from a rift in the wall.

They went deeper through a narrow passage and discovered then some of the magnificent rooms that form the Cove of Wonders. This cave is known today as Nerja Cave (Cueva de Nerja).
