La Soufrière, the highest point of the Lesser Antilles to 1467 m, is the most prestigious of the Guadeloupe National Park site. Its dome has no real crater, but eruptive vents, sinkholes and deep cuts. Active volcano Pelean type of relatively recent origin (about 100 000 years), its activity is manifested by many vapors, fumaroles, hot springs at different points of its sides and its dome.
At the top, spiky peaks and deep cuts give the Soufriere, in the mist that most of the time envelope gaits strange lunar landscape.
Since its last eruption in 1976-77, which had prompted the evacuation of more than 30,000 people, the crater South remains the most dramatic indicator of the activity of the volcano.
